Threehand - Concise Semantic Shorthand System
Threehand is a simple, "figure-out-able" ASCII-based notation system for rapid notetaking in plaintext.
1-2-3 Rule
Words in Threehand can be 1, 2, or 3 symbols long. Because the length varies, words are strictly separated by standard spaces.
The meaning of a word builds cumulatively from left to right across three distinct slots:
- Slot 1: The Foundation (Noun/Realm) - The core subject or category.
- Slot 2: The Dynamic (Verb/State) - The action, movement, or condition applied to the foundation.
- Slot 3: The Vector (Modifier/Direction) - The final direction, degree, or orientation.
The Core Alphabet
The foundation of Threehand is twelve core symbols, organized into three slots that build meaning cumulatively. When you learn these symbols and you can express nearly any concept.
I. Foundations (Slot 1)
The subject or realm - what the statement is fundamentally about:
-
@Agent: Person, individual, consciousness, self, or human entity. -
#Earth: Physical matter, tangible objects, hardware, or space. -
!Idea: Thought, information, concept, data, or software. -
%Resource: Value, currency, assets, energy, or tools. -
/Void: Null space, placeholder, boundary, or systemic context.
II. Dynamics (Slot 2)
The action or state applied to the foundation - how the realm is behaving or changing:
-
*Action: Force, execution, kinetic energy, doing, or making. -
~Flow: Change, transition, processing, time passing, or fluid state. -
=Equanimity: Balance, stability, calm, equality, or sustained state. -
?Inquiry: The unknown, a question, chaos, potential, or hidden data.
III. Vectors (Slot 3)
The final direction, degree, or orientation - where the action or state is headed:
-
+Ascent: Up, increase, improvement, high degree, or wise states. -
-Descent: Down, decrease, reduction, low degree, or grounded states. -
>Exterior: Forward, future, outward, giving, or moving toward (kindness/extension). -
<Interior: Backward, past, inward, receiving, or reflecting.
How to Read and Build Words
By combining the symbols from the core alphabet in order, complex ideas can be expressed intuitively. Threehand builds meaning progressively: starting with a foundation, injecting action or state, then directing the energy with a vector.
1-Symbol Words (Broad Realms)
A single standalone symbol represents the purest form of that concept. These are your starting points.
@= A person / Someone!= An idea / Mind#= A physical object / Place%= Value / Resources/= Void / Emptiness / Context
2-Symbol Words (Foundations + States)
Adding a second symbol adds life, action, or condition into the root noun. The realm now has agency or property.
-
@*= [Person] + [Action] → To work / To act -
!~= [Idea] + [Flow] → Thinking / Learning / Processing -
@== [Person] + [Equanimity] → Calm / At peace -
?#= [Inquiry] + [Earth] → Where? (Questioning a physical place) -
%*= [Resource] + [Action] → Labor / Work / Effort -
#~= [Earth] + [Flow] → Water / Liquid / Change
3-Symbol Words (Maximum Nuance)
The third symbol directs or scales the energy of the first two. Here, meaning reaches its full expressiveness - subtle, precise, and deeply contextual.
-
@*+= [Person] + [Action] + [Up] → To excel / To promote / Peak performance -
!~>= [Idea] + [Flow] + [Forward] → Teaching / Transmitting data / Publishing -
@=>= [Person] + [Equanimity] + [Forward] → Kindness / Projecting calm outward -
%~-= [Resource] + [Flow] + [Down] → Loss / Expense / Depreciation -
?!<= [Inquiry] + [Idea] + [Inward] → Introspection / Solving an internal riddle -
#*+= [Earth] + [Action] + [Up] → Building / Construction / Rising structure -
@~<= [Person] + [Flow] + [Inward] → Withdrawal / Introspection / Going within
Pro Tip: Once you understand the slots, you can read any Threehand word by breaking it into its component symbols. The meaning builds left-to-right. Start with the foundation, watch it move or change, then see where that energy points.
Logical Operator Connectives
Real-world note-taking requires linking complex ideas together. Use this formalized set of punctuation-based logical operators to define causal relationships between text blocks:
-
->Therefore / Leads to: Indicates causation, progress, consequences, or execution paths. -
?Condition / If: Placed at the very beginning of a phrase block to establish a conditional prerequisite. -
/?Otherwise / Else: Used to denote an alternative path if a condition is unfulfilled. -
//Separator: Acts as a hard pause, comma, or clause boundary within a single logging line.
Examples in Context
-
? %~- -> @*-→ If resources decrease, then lay off personnel (agents descend). -
!~ -> +→ Learning leads to improvement. -
@* // #= // %→ Agent works // Structure stands // Value holds.
Syntax Layout & Sentence Structure
To guarantee that a secondary reader can reliably decode your notes without ambiguity, Threehand follows a strict structural syntax layout mimicking a standard Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) flow:
- Subject Block: The primary agent, resource, or setting initiating the note.
- Action Block: The active state or verb modifier applied to the context.
- Object Block: The recipient or target of the action.
Example: @* # → [Subject: Agent
Acts] [Object: Physical space/matter] →
The person works on the physical object.
Literals & Domain-Specific Escapes
To maintain clean boundaries between universal concepts and real-world raw data, follow these strict notation rules:
-
Amounts / Quantities: Standard
numerals are integrated directly (e.g.,
5or125). -
Dates: Formatted exclusively via
standard ISO 8601 notation
(
YYYY-MM-DD). -
Times: Expressed cleanly using
24-hour notation without delimiters
(
HHMM). -
Names / Identities: Capitalized
initials represent specific people or entities
(e.g.,
BM). - Domain-Specific Vocabulary: For highly technical jargon, medical terms, or specialized domain terminology, keep the raw word in [SQUARE BRACKETS] after the Threehand code for clarity.
Domain-Specific Customization
While Threehand provides a universal foundation, you may extend it within your own organizational or personal domain by creating localized mappings. The system remains portable and human-readable across contexts when core symbols remain stable.
Composition & Complex Thoughts
Chain Threehand words to build more complex expressions. Respect the SVO structure, and use domain-specific literals where needed for clarity.
Quick Examples
-
@*+= Person + Action + Up = Excel, promote, improve -
#!= Physical matter + Idea concept = Structure, building -
!~>= Idea + Flow + Forward = Teaching, publishing -
@?= Person + Inquiry = Who? A question about agents -
%*= Resources + Action = Work, labor, effort
Sample Sentence Breakdown
To see how standard punctuation, logical connectives, and spaces interact with the shorthand, read this example note:
Threehand:
@=+ !~> #*>
Decomposition:
-
@=+= [Person + Calm + Up] = A wise, centered person -
!~>= [Idea + Flow + Forward] = Shares / Teaches / Publishing -
#*>= [Physical + Action + Forward] = Drives / Propels / Creates progress
English Translation:
A wise mind shares ideas to drive progress.
Learning & Mastery Guide
Mastering Threehand requires shifting from translating words to translating core concepts. Use the following progressive milestones to build fluency.
Phase 1: The Foundation Drill (Mental Remapping)
Before writing sentences, practice looking at your environment and classifying realities into the 5 core Slot 1 domains. Walk through your room or look at your desktop and tag items mentally:
-
Anything screen/software/thought =
! -
Anything physical/hardware/furniture =
# -
Anything financial/tools/electricity =
% - Anyone breathing/thinking =
@
Phase 2: The Core 16 Verb Fluency
The fastest way to write complex notes is to memorize
the 16 fundamental verbs. They act as the engine of your
sentences. Practice writing your physical actions in
real-time using the Void (/) base:
- Standing up from your desk:
/* + - Walking to get coffee:
/* > - Sitting down to type:
#* - - Receiving an email:
%~ <
Phase 3: The "Deconstruction" Sandbox
When you hit a word that isn't in the dictionary, do not panic. Ask yourself three questions to strip it to its semantic core:
-
What is its absolute root domain?
(Is it a mind thing
!, a physical thing#, or a systemic context/?) -
What is its active state? (Is it
moving/processing
~, doing something forceful*, or staying perfectly still=) -
Where is its energy directed? (Is
it increasing
+, decreasing-, projecting out>, or reflecting in<?)
